Advanced destroyer INS Mormugao commissioned into the Indian Navy

Mumbai: INS Mormugao, the second destroyer from the Vishakhapatnam class, has been commissioned into the Indian Navy. INS Mormugao destroyer is 163 meters long, 17 meters wide, and 7,400 tonnes will add further strength to the Indian Navy. The indigenously made warship has 75 per cent of the spare parts manufactured in the country. Citing this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that INS Mormugao is the most advanced Guided Missile Destroyer in the world.

Advanced destroyer INS Mormugao commissioned into the Indian NavyINS Mormugao was inducted into the Navy in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, as well as senior naval officers, Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai and Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa. Under the 15B project undertaken by the Navy, four Visakhapatnam class destroyers were to be acquired by the Navy. INS Mormugao is the second destroyer of this project which Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has built. This destroyer is said to have received its name from the historical port of Mormugao in Goa. The first sea trials of INS Mormugao were conducted on 19 December 2021, and a year later, it joined the Indian Navy.

Guns and other systems onboard INS Mormugao are interlocked with sophisticated radar systems capable of accurately targeting the enemy. The destroyer has tremendous surface-to-surface and surface-to-air capabilities. BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems are also deployed on this destroyer. INS Mormugao also has nuclear, chemical, and biological attack capabilities. Also, this destroyer can perform very effectively in anti-submarine warfare because of the indigenously developed rocket launchers and torpedoes installed on this destroyer. Helicopters can also be deployed on INS Mormugao.

This destroyer is a shining example of the country’s self-reliance on manufacturing defence assets. Rajnath Singh claimed that this destroyer could deal with present and future threats. The defence minister praised the engineers, technicians, designers, and scientists who worked tirelessly to build this destroyer.

Protecting the country’s interests in the Indian Ocean region is the basic responsibility of the Navy. The growth of India’s economy is directly linked to the country’s growing trade. Most of this trade takes place by the sea. Hence India’s interests are directly linked to the Indian Ocean. As a major country in this region, the role of the Indian Navy in the Indian Ocean is very important. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh added further that it is a matter of great satisfaction that the Indian Navy is carrying out its responsibility effectively.

On this occasion, the defence minister also appreciated the performance of the Defence Forces in protecting the country’s land and marine borders. Rajnath Singh claimed that defence forces had contributed a lot to the country’s development as India is attaining new heights of success every day. India is now included in the top five economies of the world. According to Morgan Stanley, a renowned international financial investment institution, the defence minister pointed out that India will be among the top three economies in the world in the next five years.
