NATO augments deployments in Kosovo due to rising tensions between Serbia and KosovoThe tension between Serbia and Kosovo has been steadily increasing for the past few months. The government of Kosovo had started implementing some plans against the citizens of Serbian origin in the country. There was a strong reaction from the Serbian government and the Serbian citizens. Serbia also warned Kosovo by sending its helicopters near the Kosovo marine border. In this case, the United States and NATO sided with Kosovo and warned Serbia to stop aggressive activities. Attempts were made to put pressure on Serbia in various ways. President Vučić also made extreme statements that Serbia was being pushed towards war due to pressure from the West. That made the tension even worse. Against this backdrop, the Serbian government demanded deployment of the Serbian police in Kosovo as per the provisions of the United Nations resolution.

Following the demand, NATO said it has stepped up its operations and increased deployments and patrols in parts of Kosovo. After the agreement in 1999, NATO deployed nearly 4,000 soldiers in Kosovo through the ‘KFOR’ operation.
