Gold deposits were found about ten years back in the Tisbesti Mountains range of the Kouri Bougoudi district, which is located 600 kilometres from the capital of Chad. Miners from Chad and neighbouring countries of Mauritania and Libya started illegally moving to this region. There are frequent conflicts between the citizens of Chad and these neighbouring countries over gold excavation. Last week, a dispute flared up following an argument between the Mauritanian and Libyan citizens.

The army intervened to gain control of the situation and subsequently opened fire on miners. As per the claims of the Chief of the human rights organisation, more than 200 people were killed in this assault. After the incident, the opposition parties and human rights organisations held the Chad government responsible for the violence.

Daoud Yaya Brahim, Defence Minister of Chad, dismissed all the allegations levelled by the opposition and the human rights organisations. Brahim said that the military did not resort to firing in this region, and there is no truth in the report claiming that there were 200 casualties.

Chad got its independence from France in 1960. The Tisbesti region in the country is infamous for ethnic violence. Many people were killed in a similar conflict in the Kouri Bougoudi district about three years ago. Following the violence, the Chad military has taken over the region, and it is said that the situation is under control.
