Texas governor to use ‘war powers’ to stop refugees

Texas: The governor of Texas has hinted at using ‘war powers’ to stop the invasion of illegal refugees entering the country due to the weak policies of US President Joe Biden. As per the US constitution, no state can use ‘war powers’ without declaring that the state is under attack. Therefore, local media has claimed that Texas Governor Greg Abbott will use ‘war powers’ by declaring an invasion of refugees. This is likely to intensify the political conflict in the United States as the state’s governor’s announcement of ‘war powers’ is an open challenge to the Biden administration.

Texas governor to use 'war powers' to stop refugeesLast month, President Biden announced the repeal of the ‘Title 42’ provision, which seeks to curb the flow of refugees. ‘Title 42’ has a condition to send the immigrants back on health grounds. It was used effectively by former President Donald Trump during the Coronavirus pandemic. But now that the pandemic has subsided, the Biden administration has ordered that the use of ‘Title 42’ be stopped.

Former officials, political leaders and the media have expressed concern that Biden’s decision could lead to a rise of illegal immigrants entering the United States.

A US court has slammed the Biden administration’s decision, ruling that ‘Title 42’ cannot be annulled. Yet President Biden has hinted at implementing his directives.

The US states along the Mexican border have adopted an aggressive stand against this decision. The indications given by Texas Governor Greg Abbott regarding the use of ‘war powers’ is a part of that.

If Abbott starts exercising these rights, local security agencies in the province will have the power to take action against illegal immigrants. Local authorities will be able to arrest refugees and deport them and take additional action.

But at the same time, it could face legal challenges from the Biden administration, as well as from NGOs and Democrats.

Texas Governor Abbott has previously announced a provision of nearly $3 billion to curb illegal refugees. These funds are used for the deployment of the National Guards and the construction of the border wall. Abbott has hinted at building a border wall of more than 100 miles.

After Biden took over, he had started making decisions that gave free rein to the illegal refugees. Biden said that Trump’s policy on refugees was a blot on the United States. The Biden administration also introduced a new bill in parliament to grant citizenship to more than ten million illegal immigrants living in the United States.

These policies have created a state of emergency in states such as Texas and Florida on the US-Mexico border.
