Lt. Gen. Manoj Pande to become the new Indian Army ChiefThere had been an attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001. After that, the Indian Army launched Operation Parakram on the Jammu Kashmir border as strong retaliation against the Pakistan sponsored terrorist activities. Lieutenant General Pande had played a major role in Operation Parakram. Feeling the pressure of the movements of the Indian Army, Pakistan had conceded that it would not allow any terrorist outfits to operate from its land.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Pande is currently heading the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. He is responsible for the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. He has proved his ability to lead the Indian Army during heightened tensions with China. Before this, Lieutenant General Pande also functioned as the Chief of Andaman Nicobar Command. He has also led the Indian Army missions in Ethiopia and Eritrea. He has been honoured with Paramvishista Seva Medal, Ativishishta Seva medal and Vishishta Seva medal.

Meanwhile, following the accidental death of the first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, the post is still vacant. Discussions have started about whether Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane will be appointed as the new Defence Chief. But there have been no announcements or indications given by the government regarding this.
