Liz Truss elected as Prime Minister of United Kingdom

London: Former British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has been elected as UK’s Prime Minister. Truss defeated her rival Rishi Sunak by more than 20,000 votes in the election held by the ruling ‘Conservative’ party. Truss, a supporter of former prime minister Boris Johnson and the one known to have a staunch anti-Russia and anti-China image, will become the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Before her, Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May held the post of British Prime Minister.

Liz Truss got 81,326 votes in the final voting phase and Rishi Sunak got 60,399 votes.

Truss’s stance on tax cuts, government downsizing, and ambitious plans to tackle the energy crisis are said to have helped her win the majority. It is said that the ruling party members have also taken up the matter of supporting former Prime Minister Johnson till the end. The party leaders reported that Truss received 57% of the total vote. In a speech after her election as prime minister was announced, Truss congratulated rival Sunak and vowed to keep the party united as a family.

The verbal encounter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was also a topic of international discussion among the media. Besides, her support for British citizens to participate in the Ukraine conflict was controversial.
