London: Former British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has been elected as UK’s Prime Minister. Truss defeated her rival Rishi Sunak by more than 20,000 votes in the election held by the ruling ‘Conservative’ party. Truss, a supporter of former prime minister Boris Johnson and the one known to have a staunch anti-Russia and anti-China image, will become the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Before her, Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May held the post of British Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson was forced to resign as Prime Minister due to some incidents during the Coronavirus pandemic, ceremonies held at the Prime Minister’s residence and controversial appointments of officials. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak reached the final round in the elections announced by the ruling ‘Conservative’ party for the leader post. Liz Truss got 81,326 votes in the final voting phase and Rishi Sunak got 60,399 votes.
Truss’s stance on tax cuts, government downsizing, and ambitious plans to tackle the energy crisis are said to have helped her win the majority. It is said that the ruling party members have also taken up the matter of supporting former Prime Minister Johnson till the end. The party leaders reported that Truss received 57% of the total vote. In a speech after her election as prime minister was announced, Truss congratulated rival Sunak and vowed to keep the party united as a family.
Born in Oxford and educated at Oxford University, 47-year-old Liz Truss started her political career from the Liberal Democrat Party. In the early days, Truss, who later joined the ‘Conservative’ party, was also against ‘Brexit’. But later, Truss strongly supported Brexit and took the initiative to implement it. Before taking over as Prime Minister, Liz Truss served as Minister for Education, Environment, Justice, Trade and Foreign Affairs.
Moreover, Truss, who has a staunch anti-Russia and anti-China image, visited Ukraine before the Russia-Ukraine conflict and unleashed a scathing attack against Russia. The verbal encounter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was also a topic of international discussion among the media. Besides, her support for British citizens to participate in the Ukraine conflict was controversial. 
Truss also took an aggressive stance on China’s investment in sensitive areas in the United Kingdom and its stance on Hong Kong and Taiwan. After Brexit, Truss played a key role in the trade deals that the United Kingdom made with various countries.
Meanwhile, political analysts have claimed that the main challenges facing Truss after assuming the post of Prime Minister will be the ‘Cost of Living Crisis’, the influx of refugees, the Ukraine conflict and the further implementation of Brexit.
