Bangladesh PM visits India

New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on a visit to India. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and had a discussion. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. It is said that bilateral cooperation agreements will be signed at this time. India is developing infrastructure to increase trade with eastern countries, which has given India’s cooperation with Bangladesh great importance. Against this backdrop, PM Sheikh Hanisa’s visit to India becomes significant.

Bangladesh PM visits IndiaThe impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine and steep fuel prices have adversely affected the economy of Bangladesh. Therefore, there was a discussion about whether a situation like Sri Lanka would also arise in Bangladesh. But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed confidence in the economic condition of her country. Nevertheless, Bangladesh has further enhanced cooperation with India to tackle the financial crisis. India has provided loan assistance to Bangladesh on four occasions in the past. This includes funds provided for the development of ports as well as the development of the airport. In the future, too, Bangladesh will expect a large amount of loan assistance and investment from India. It is claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will have a significant discussion on it during this visit. However, the government of Bangladesh has not given information on it.

Even India considerably needs Bangladesh to increase trade with eastern countries. At the same time, India has also taken steps to ensure that its neighbouring country does not fall into the trap of Chinese investment. Some time ago, Bangladesh was also lured by China’s investment, and China announced an investment of four billion dollars in Bangladesh under its ambitious ‘Belt and Road Initiative’. But over time, the government of Bangladesh withdrew some of its projects from China.

Meanwhile, India had signed an agreement and ended the border dispute with Bangladesh. However, India and Bangladesh have not yet agreed on sharing water from the rivers between the two countries. A meeting of the Joint River Commission of the two countries was held recently in this regard. There are claims that there is a consensus on water sharing of some rivers at this time. Therefore, it is being reported that an agreement for water sharing of these rivers will be signed during the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
