A three-judge panel of the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered an investigation into the Israeli war crimes. ICC clarified that these include war crimes in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem, taken over by Israel after the 1967 war. ICC has said that the attacks launched by the Israel military on the Gaza Strip and the rocket attacks by Hamas, will also be investigated. ICC said that the issue of the refugee settlements created by Israel, in the West Bank is also included in this.

In 2019, Fatou Bensouda had demanded that war crimes should be filed against Israel. This announcement has come two years after the appeal. Mahmood Abbas, President of Palestine West Bank, has welcomed the decision. The Palestinian leaders feel confident that Israel will certainly face punishment, now that the ICC has ordered an investigation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticised the decision of the ICC. Netanyahu accused that ICC is clarifying its anti-Israel stand, by ordering investigations into fake war crimes.
