Iranian Foreign Minister visits IndiaDuring his three-day visit, the Iranian Foreign Minister will also be meeting Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar expressed confidence that his discussions with the Iranian Foreign Minister would underline the close cooperation between the two countries. Two days ago, while on a tour of European countries, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar had hinted that India would buy fuel from Iran. Jaishankar had demanded during his visit to Europe that if the West wanted to stop buying Russian fuel, citing the conflict in Ukraine, it should first lift the embargo on fuel exports from Iran and Venezuela.

Therefore, the issue of fuel procurement seems to be at the forefront of discussions between External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. When Donald Trump was the President of the United States, he imposed strict sanctions on Iran. As a result, Iran’s fuel exports almost came to a grinding halt. Due to US sanctions, India had to limit its fuel trade with Iran. This affected bilateral trade and diplomatic relations between India and Iran.

However, some analysts claimed India had not stopped buying fuel from Iran. But now, the Biden administration is preparing to lift sanctions on Iran’s fuel exports. At the same time, the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister to India is of great economic and political significance. In particular, given the role the OIC has taken against India over the past few weeks, the initiative taken by Iran to enhance cooperation with India has become significant.
