Iran to open port for India-Russia trade

Tehran: Iran is ready to make its port Bandar Abbas available for trade between India and Russia. Trials have been started for this purpose. The containers will be transported from Saint Petersburg, Russia, to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas via the Caspian Sea. From there, these containers will be shipped to the Indian port of Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai. This can greatly increase the trade between India and Russia. It is claimed that Iran has increased its importance significantly with this decision. At the same time, analysts say it will give India a double advantage.

As a result, the friendly cooperation between India and Russia could not translate into the trade. The India-Russia trade was impeded by the geographic distance and obstacles created by countries like Pakistan. But now that Iran has opened its port, Bandar Abbas, for trade, it will pave the way for India’s trade with Russia and central Asian and European countries. This will bring huge benefits to the Indian economy.

Iran’s state-run news agency reported on this. The news agency said Iran was preparing to allow the port Bandar Abbas to be used to transport cargo from Russia to India. This will link Russia with Indian ports and thereby with Southeast Asia. The news agency said this would also benefit India, as India can connect with the European countries through this corridor.

India, Russia and Iran are the founders of the International North-South Transport Corridor. The Iranian news agency explained that the implementation of the proposal, which came in this regard in 2002, will begin and work on it has also started at the trial level. This corridor has huge economic, political and strategic implications. Analysts say that this is a ploy by Iran to increase its importance. At the same time, analysts have underlined the importance of the project, saying it would bring double benefits to India.
