Iran summons China envoy over disputed islands in Persian Gulf

Tehran: Iran has reacted to the statements made by Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the islands in the Persian Gulf during his visit to the Middle East nations. The islands mentioned by China and Middle East nations in their statement belong to Iran. Iran warned that there can be no negotiations with any country now or ever. At the same time, Iran has summoned China’s ambassador to Tehran in this matter and demanded an answer from China at the diplomatic level.

During the meeting with the Middle East nations, President Xi Jinping specifically mentioned the UAE while calling for peaceful cooperation in this area. China supports the initiative taken by the UAE to find a peaceful solution to the issue of the three islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that it is appropriate to resolve this issue through bilateral negotiations within the framework of international rules.

Moreover, Xi Jinping suggested Iran must fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding its nuclear program. Iran expressed displeasure as China raised these two issues in the meeting of the Middle East nations. Iran has claimed all three islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf. All these three sovereign islands are part of Iran and international organisations’ recommendations, agreements, or regulations do not apply in this regard. Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned that if Iran’s neighbouring countries try to establish authority over these islands, they will be met with a strong, harsh response. Iran rejected China’s proposal by saying that Iran would not allow the Atomic Energy Agency’s inspectors on the nuclear program issue.
