Last month, a US news organisation released a report a few days ago that the US and Iranian officials had met in Oman in the Gulf region. With the world’s attention focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Biden administration planned to hold secret talks with Iran. Reports had also emerged that the Biden administration threatened Iran regarding this discussion. Some officials of the Biden administration had said the meeting was held to send a message that if Iran increases Uranium enrichment to 90%, the consequences will be quite serious.

The Biden administration has been trying to re-adopt the nuclear agreement the US and other Western countries signed with Iran in 2015. For this, Israeli media had expressed the possibility of discussions between the officials of the US and Iran in Oman, and the Biden administration had denied it.

However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has admitted to the discussion with the US. At the same time, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani clarified that their country was not keen on the nuclear dealinterim agreement offered by the Biden administration. Instead, Kanaani demanded that the US reverse its decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal in 2018 and re-adopt the 2015 agreement. Kanaani said that during the indirect talks with the US, Iran had strongly expressed the same idea.

Moreover, the US has said this report was completely false despite Iran acknowledging the discussion had happened. At the same time, the US has stated that it only means to send a message to Iran through a meeting in Oman. Nevertheless, the Biden administration is not ready to make a statement on the demand made by Iran during this meeting. The Israeli media claims this interim agreement allows Iran to continue enriching Uranium. Also, Israeli leaders and media fear that if that happens, Iran will be very close to making an atomic bomb.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again indicated that Israel would not be bound to any agreement after Iran publicly acknowledged the talks with the US. Netanyahu has warned that Israel will do whatever is necessary to defend itself.
