In the last decade, there was a significant democratic agitation in Hongkong against the repression of the Chinese communist regime. As part of this agitation, numerous violent incidents took place during the protests in 2019. The protests, which took place two years ago, sparked outrage among the people of Hongkong against the Chinese regime. Upset with this growing discontent, the Chinese communist regime imposed a ‘National Security Law’ in Hong Kong in 2020. Moreover, strict provisions were made in the law to prevent any citizen, group or community in Hongkong from going against China. Following the same clauses, elections were held for 20 seats in the Hongkong Legislature. The candidates contesting in the election were selected by the agencies that are a part of the communist regime in China. Therefore, all the candidates were from China. Despite showing many concessions and lures for voting, only 30% of votes were cast in the elections held on Sunday. This is the lowest turnout in Hongkong in two decades. The results of the polls have also been announced in which all the Chinese candidates have been elected.

All of these processes have provoked strong reactions from the international community. The ‘Five Eyes’ group, set up to exchange confidential information, has launched a scathing attack on China. Five Eyes warned ‘The new system in Hongkong has permanently silenced the voices of the opposition in the region. We are deeply concerned about the consequences of the National Security Law.’

Following the ‘Five Eyes’, the G7 and the European Union also expressed their displeasure over the developments in Hongkong. The G7 and the Union slammed China saying that the Chinese communist regime is trying to undermine democracy in Hongkong. The Union alleged that Sunday’s election was a step towards destroying the formula ‘one country, two systems.’ The United States announced sanctions against five Chinese officials. At the same time, it was warned that the financial institutions operating in China would also have to bear the brunt of actions.
