Stefano Sanio, director of the European Union‘s External Action Service, recently visited the United States and held discussions with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. The issue of atrocities against the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang province and the Tibetans in the acquired Tibet was discussed at the meeting. At the same time, the joint statement also accuses that the Chinese activities are an encroachment on the autonomy of Hongkong.

The Chinese activities in the East and the South China Sea, along with the Taiwan Strait, are directly affecting the peace and stability of the region. Sherman and Stefano clarified that this is directly linked to the security and prosperity of the United States and the European Union. The language of the joint statement is extremely soft and there is no possibility of the statement having any effect on China. Former President Donald Trump accused that China is indulging in these aggressive actions. The Biden administration in the United States will certainly not take any stern action against it. Trump also warned that China would attack Taiwan after next year’s Winter Olympics. In this scenario, the Biden administration is being criticised for not doing anything more than issuing warnings to China. While a country like Japan is adopting a tough stand against the possible Chinese attack on Taiwan, the soft stand of the Biden administration, on this front, could pose a threat to the US interests.
