India-Bangladesh to discuss CEPA

Dhaka: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit India next month. The Bangladesh economy also has taken a big hit due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent Ukraine conflict and concerns that a situation like Sri Lanka can develop in the country. The reductions in the foreign currency reserves of Bangladesh are proof of this. This has put the future of the Sheikh Hasina government in jeopardy. Some analysts claim that the Bangladesh Prime Minister is looking to India for assistance.

India-Bangladesh to discuss CEPASheikh Hasina will be visiting India on 5th and 6th of September. Moreover, negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will soon start between the two countries. So far, Bangladesh has not signed a comprehensive agreement of this nature with any other country. Therefore, India can become the first country to establish this kind of cooperation with Bangladesh. China was trying to get Bangladesh to sign a similar agreement. But Bangladesh has preferred India over China, given the economic mess in Pakistan and Sri Lanka following the cooperation with China.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh exports may increase by 190% if the CEPA is signed with India. Whereas, the Indian exports to Bangladesh will increase by 188%. Bangladesh desperately needs this in the current state of its economy. At the same time, India will also benefit from this cooperation with Bangladesh.
