Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Bangladesh visit

Dhaka: Indian Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, is on a visit to Bangladesh and he met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Prime Minister Hasina had avoided meeting foreign delegates, given the Coronavirus pandemic. However, on meeting Indian Foreign Secretary, the Bangladesh Prime Minister underlined the importance of relations with India. At this time, both the countries concurred on increasing the exchange of sensitive and confidential information, in the fight against extremist factions.

Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla, met Prime Minister Hasina on Tuesday. Foreign Secretary Shringla delivered a special message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Bangladesh Prime Minister. Prime Minister Hasina said that the Prime Minister has underlined the importance of India-Bangladesh relations by sending the Foreign Secretary. Prime Minister Hasina thanked India for the cooperation extended during the Coronavirus crisis and the locomotive’s engines given by India to Bangladesh. India is working on three vaccines against Coronavirus. India will be testing these vaccines even in Bangladesh. Discussions over the Indian concepts to bring the economy back on track, were discussed during the meeting. Both the leaders expressed confidence that the cooperation will continue even after the Coronavirus crisis is over. Both the leaders also concurred on increasing the cooperation against extremism.   

The India-Bangladesh infrastructure projects were reviewed. Since the last few months, the infrastructure projects in both countries have gained momentum. India is willing to provide financial assistance to Bangladesh for this purpose. At the same time, an Air Bubble is also under consideration to increase connectivity between the two countries.  

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Shringla also met the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary. Next year the India-Bangladesh relations will complete 50 years. Prime Minister Modi was also scheduled to visit Bangladesh, on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangladesh founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman. But the visit was cancelled given the Coronavirus pandemic. Now, the Foreign Secretary, attached the highest priority to the relations, with the neighbouring countries, by visiting Bangladesh. While China is trying to entangle Bangladesh in its net, the importance of the visit of the Indian Foreign Secretary increases further.
