Group Captain Varun Singh, the sole survivor of the helicopter crash, passes away

New Delhi: – The fight with the death of Group Captain Varun Singh, the sole survivor of the helicopter crash at Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, finally ended. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Defence Chief General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 other defence officials were martyred in the accident. Captain Varun Singh was being treated for the injuries received during the crash. The President and Prime Minister of India have expressed grief over the death of Captain Varun Singh.

The helicopter carrying Defence Chief Bipin Rawat met with an unfortunate accident on the 8th of December. 13 out of the 14 people on board the helicopter were martyred on the spot. These included General Bipin Rawat, his wife and other air force officials. Whereas, Captain Varun Singh had been brought to the hospital in a critical state. He was on life support systems for the entire week. His condition remained extremely critical. The entire country was praying for his recovery. Experts and doctors from the country were making all possible efforts to save him. But he succumbed finally, on Wednesday. The helicopter crashed when Defence Chief General Bipin Rawat was going to the Defence Services College at Wellington to deliver a lecture. Group Captain Varun Singh was posted at the Sulur airbase. Recently, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.  

Last year, when a Tejas fighter jet developed an engine snag, Captain Varun Singh demonstrated exemplary courage to remain in the cockpit and skillfully landed the jet. He received the Shaurya Chakra honour for this feat.
