Russia supplies oil to Iran by rail to overcome Western sanctions

Last year, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexander Novak visited Iran to sign a $40 billion energy deal to trade crude oil and refined fuel. As Western sanctions targeted both Russia and Iran, the initiation of trade out of the deal was being discussed.

Sources have confirmed that Russia has started to supply fuel to Iran by rail. In the last two months, nearly 30 thousand tons of fuel have been supplied using the rail network passing through the former Soviet countries Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. While some of the supply has happened through Iraq. Previously, Russia used to supply fuel through the Caspian Sea route. However, since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the sanctions imposed by the West made it difficult to use the conventional trade route.

Against this background, Russia and Iran have found an alternative to use rail routes for the fuel trade. Russia expects trade to increase in the coming years.
