China records a decline in population for the first time in six decades - resentment amongst citizens against government

Beijing – The one-child policy implemented over decades and the recent Covid 19 since 2019 has resulted in a decline in the population of China. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the population has decreased by 0.85 million, the first time in the last six decades. With new data coming in, India is now the country with the largest population in the world, as claimed by the United Nations. Elon Musk, the famous entrepreneur, had warned of the declining population as a threat to the future of human civilization.

On Tuesday, the National Bureau of Statistics in China announced the population data. It shows that the population, as recorded at 1.411 billion has declined by 0.8 million, whereas the birth rate has dropped to 6.77 per thousand. This is the lowest recorded birth rate. The data also showed that the number of women aged 25 to 35 years likely to give birth has reduced by 4 million.

The data indicates a trend in lower birth rates, a decline in women likely to produce babies and a higher death rate. In 2022, the death rate was 7.37 per thousand, the highest since 1974. The one-child policy implemented from 1980 to 2015 is the main cause of the declining population. Experts in China suggest that although the policy was relaxed in 2016, the new generation is not ready for change.

As soon as the data was reported from China, there were many reactions from the international level. The United Nations claims that India is now the most populous country in the world, with a population of 1.412 billion.

If the trend continues, China’s population will decrease by 10 million by 2050. Chinese citizens are expressing their dissent against the government policies and demanding support and incentives for families to raise children.

Furthermore, Elon Musk warned through social media that a declining population would threaten the future of human survival. Before China, the population decline was reported in the US, Japan, South Korea and European countries.
