Europe’s security relies on security of Middle East: EU foreign policy chief -

Abu Dhabi: The importance of Energy and Security cooperation between Europe and the Middle East is like never before, as the energy supply from the Middle East is changing the dynamics of Europe. Hence, European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell stated, ‘ Your (Middle East) security is our security (Europe)’. With the current strained relations between the US with the Middle East, the role of Europe has become quite significant.

Josep Borrell, Head of European Union Foreign Policy, visited the UAE a few days back. The ongoing Russia- Ukraine war has caused an energy crisis in Europe, which has prompted Europe to engage in increasing energy cooperation with the UAE and other countries in the Middle East. While speaking to a local news agency during his two-day visit, Borrell highlighted the importance of establishing cooperation with the Middle east.

Borrell said that Europe was importing 40% of its energy demand before the Ukraine conflict from Russia alone. However, since the battle started, it has come down to 8%. In such a scenario, the Middle East has supported and offered a supply of energy, which will establish long-term energy cooperation.

Borrell highlighted that the energy crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict is expected to continue for a year. Hence energy and security cooperation with the Middle East is extremely important. At the same time, Borrell expressed that since the conventional energy supply would not be unlimited, the European Union is committed to investing in renewable energy in the Middle East. Borrell explained that the energy crisis had emphasised the need to develop renewable energy like Hydrogen.

The Middle East is not just important for the supply of energy but strategically significant as it connects Europe to Southeast Asia. Hence, the security of the Middle East region is equivalent to Europe’s security, Borrell said.
