US President and his Chinese counterpart shake hands at the 'G-20' SummitWhen former US President Donald Trump was in power, he waged an aggressive trade war against China. After that, Trump took decisions that severely shocked China on many other issues, including Taiwan and Corona epidemic. Following the US, major Indo-Pacific and European countries started openly challenging China. Due to strong dissatisfaction with China’s activities at the international level with the United States, Biden, who took over after Trump, was also forced to maintain a strict policy towards China. It is said that the relationship between the US and China has reached an abyss due to the change in US policy and the growing authoritarianism of Xi Jinping in China.

China’s support for Russia in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has angered the West, including the US. Many systems in the United States and Europe are publishing reports claiming that China is the main competitor. But at the same time, these countries take steps to maintain dialogue by increasing economic and trade relations with China. A few days ago, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, the leading European economy, recently visited China. After that, it came to light that US President Biden also met Xi Jinping and discussed for more than three hours.

From the US, they included Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns. From China, along with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, three senior leaders of the Politburo newly appointed by Xi Jinping were present. The White House informed that many international issues, including bilateral relations, were discussed during the meeting.

The White House has denied the claims that Biden raised the issue of Taiwan along with Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong in this discussion. But it is becoming clear that its intensity was not enough to hit China. The US also informed that the two leaders agreed that nuclear weapons should not be used in Ukraine.

Last month, Xi Jinping declared himself the leader of China and the Communist Party. There was a strong reaction from the international level. Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, China will become increasingly aggressive and authoritarian, and China’s belligerent ambitions will be unstoppable. Claims were also made that Western countries should unite to stop China’s ambitions. But in reality, the US President’s visit shows that the countries making such claims are trying to maintain cooperation and dialogue with Xi Jinping’s regime.
