Do not attempt to impose conditions on India - US analyst gives explicit advice to Biden administration

Washington – Lisa Curtis, a US analyst, clearly said that US President Biden should thoroughly discuss the issue of India’s policy and human rights related to Russia with the Indian Prime Minister but must not condition its support. She sternly said that while raising the human rights issue before Prime Minister Modi, the US President should show restraint and not adopt an unnecessarily aggressive stance, as the US also cannot claim that it is an ideal democracy. Besides, Curtis warned that the Biden administration should realise that India is a very important country for the US, given China’s aggression in the Indo-Pacific.

Prime Minister Modi has reached the US and has been welcomed emphatically. There also have been claims that this visit would prove historic for many reasons. Moreover, discussions have begun that both countries will take important decisions regarding cooperation on strategic and other fronts. However, while some US public representatives had demanded that Biden raise controversial issues before Prime Minister Modi, US analyst Lisa Curtis has explicitly advised the Biden administration.

Given China’s growing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, the importance of the US’s cooperation with India has considerably increased. Thus, President Biden’s decision to ignore the differences with India on Russia and other issues has been sensible in such a situation. However, the United States should avoid putting any conditions before India while assisting it. Furthermore, Curtis drew the Biden administration’s attention to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s activities underway in the Indo-Pacific being connected. Thus, she has advised the Biden administration to avoid making the mistake of hurting India.

Meanwhile, US representatives had demanded President Biden raise controversial issues during discussions with India. Simultaneously, the White House had also made it clear that President Biden would discuss the point of the Ukraine conflict with Prime Minister Modi.
