Defence Ministers of Japan, US and South Korea to meet

Tokyo – The defence ministers of Japan, South Korea and the United States will hold a special meeting in Hawaii next month. The conference is claimed to occur given the growing threats from China’s maritime operations in the Indo-Pacific region and North Korea’s ballistic missiles. A Japanese news channel claimed that this tripartite meeting was crucial for the stability of this region.

China, Japan, South Korea, US, Defence ministers,A meeting between Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi, South Korean Defence Minister Seo Wook and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will be held in mid-January. The meeting will discuss the issue of denuclearizing North Korea and preventing the testing of ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, the three countries’ defence ministers will present their views on China’s aggressive moves in the South China Sea region; a Japanese news channel quoted sources saying.

This will be the second meeting between the defence ministers of Japan, the United States and South Korea. Earlier this month, a separate discussion was held between the US and South Korean defence ministers. In the first week of next month, there will be a ‘Two Plus Two’ discussion between Japan and the United States.

Meanwhile, Japan and China have announced plans to launch a hotline to ease tensions over the rights of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The announcement came after talks between Japanese Defense Minister Kishi and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe on Monday.
