Due to the ‘Open Door Policy’ adopted by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the last decade, the number of refugees infiltrating Europe has increased significantly. In 2015, the number of refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea into Europe reached one million. In the new year, information has come to the fore that the number of refugees infiltrating European countries has increased tremendously. Last month, the European Union’s ‘Frontex’ mechanism drew attention to the issue of an increase of more than 300 per cent in refugee flows into Europe from the Mediterranean region.

According to the information released by the German agencies, in the first five months of 2023, more than 125,000 refugees have tried to infiltrate Germany. Against this background, the announcement made by multinational companies to give jobs to refugees in Europe assumes significance. The voluntary group, ‘Tent Partnership for Refugees’, informed the media about this initiative. Tuesday, June 20, is celebrated as ‘World Refugee Day’; against this background, a plan to prioritise refugees in jobs is likely to be announced.

Currently, more than 40 top companies, including Amazon, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Starbucks, Adidas, PepsiCo, ISS, and L’Oreal, will train millions of refugees in Europe. Out of these, 13,680 refugees are being provided direct jobs. The officials of the concerned companies shared the information about including posts of a storage centre, transport, delivery, housekeeping, kitchen staff, and front desk in the jobs being offered to the refugees. Amazon has clarified that it has taken this decision to diversify its workforce.

Furthermore, refugees who have reached Europe from Ukraine will get jobs from multinational companies. Against the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, information about more than 10 million refugees entering European countries came to the fore. European countries giving special treatment to Ukrainian refugees over refugees from other countries have been criticised by Asian and African nations as well as some international groups. On the other hand, some European countries are taking the initiative to send illegal refugees from Asian and African countries to countries outside Europe.
