Taipei: – As per information received, a meeting was recently held between Brazil and Taiwan to discuss cooperation in the 5G sector. Brazil is known as the main trading partner of China in the Latin American continent. Last year, Brazil had even imported vaccines from China due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Against this background, the meeting between Brazil and Taiwan becomes significant.
The meeting was held in the Brazilian City of Sao Paolo. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and International Trade Bureau officials were present for the meeting. Sources informed that the officials from the Brazilian local administration were present for the meeting. The Taiwanese officials informed about the advances made by their country in the digital sector and the leading Taiwanese companies in the sector. Underlining the contribution of these companies in the 5G sector, the Taiwanese representatives claimed that these companies could play a major role in the Brazilian 5G network.
Only last month, Brazil invited tenders to build the 5G technology infrastructure in the country. The Chinese company Huawei was omitted from the process. Although this company is still active in Brazil, the Brazil government has taken a cautious stand following a warning from the United States. Brazil will be forced to tie up with a European or an American company after refusing the Huawei technology. It is believed that the discussions are being held with Taiwan as an alternative if there are any problems in the process.
Brazil has established trade cooperation with Taiwan along with China and the trade between the two countries is nearly $400 million. Last year, the Chinese embassy had suggested that the Brazilian government not congratulate and send such messages to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen. The Brazilian leaders had posted the Chinese suggestion in the media. A strong reaction had emanated from Brazil over this. The Brazilian citizens had started a ‘Viva Taiwan’ campaign over social media to oppose China. This is considered to be a major jolt for the Chinese pressure tactics. Brazil also seems to have delivered a message to China by starting talks with Taiwan regarding the 5G technology.
