China had conducted marine tests of AI-controlled drone nearly a decade ago, claims Hongkong based Chinese newspaper

Hongkong: – China has made huge progress on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) front. Nearly a decade ago, China developed AI-controlled marine attack drones. The Hongkong based Chinese newspaper claimed that the Chinese military had tested these drones successfully in the Taiwan Strait. A university connected with the Chinese military said that the relevant documentation has been revealed to the media in the last week. It is claimed that this information was published to threaten Japan, claiming that Taiwanese security is connected with Japanese security.

Chinese mouthpiece and media consistently claim that China is competing with the United States on the fronts of military technology and preparedness. The information revealed by the Hongkong based newspaper, South China Morning Post, is apparently a part of the same campaign. The newspaper carried the report prepared by military-linked Harbin Engineering University. Harbin University is known to be an institution working on submarine technologies.

In 2010, the Chinese military had developed an AI-based underwater drone. The report claims that this drone can locate enemy ships, destroyers and submarines, using sonar technology and launch attacks. The Chinese military tested this drone at 32 feet (10 Metres) in the Taiwan Strait. The report reveals that this marine drone had destroyed a dummy submarine with a torpedo ten years ago.

The advanced version of this drone can remain hidden at the ocean floor for a few days. The report claims that these hidden drones can launch an attack on enemy warships during times of conflict or war. The details of this drone had not been revealed for the last ten years. But in the last week, the Chinese University declassified the report showing certain details regarding the drone. The Chinese newspaper carried this information.

Military analysts and media are raising doubts regarding this information released by the Chinese university after ten years. China revealed the HSU-001 marine drone for the first time in 2019. The concerned drone cannot launch a torpedo. At the same time, a bigger and more capable drone is required to launch an anti-submarine torpedo.

In the last week, a question is being asked as to why China chose to reveal the information regarding this drone. Last week, Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso declared that Taiwanese security is connected with Japanese security. Deputy Prime Minister Aso announced that if Taiwan comes under attack, Japan also will enter the fray along with the United States for the security of Taiwan. China threatened that Japan would be digging its own grave by entering into a war with China for Taiwan. Against this background, China is threatening Taiwan and Japan by revealing information regarding this drone.
