China has refused to participate in any part of the arbitration proceedings insisting it has “undisputed sovereignty” over the South China Sea. China has refused to participate in the case and has boycotted the hearings at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
China has declared that the verdict would be “nothing but a piece of paper”.
Control of the South China Sea is the most contentious and explosive diplomatic issue in east Asia, with China asserting sovereignty over maritime areas but are also claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Japan. At one hand Russia is supporting China, US is opposing China’s claim over it thorugh “#9-dash-line”.
