China funds terrorists for mineral mining in Nigeria – Severely alleges a British daily

London/Abuja – Chinese nationals working in the mining sector in the African country of Nigeria have been funding terrorist groups to gain control of the minerals there. The Times, a British daily, severely alleged China of fueling terrorism, not directly but indirectly. China has rejected these allegations against it. But the British newspaper has drawn attention to the fact that Nigerian security forces detained Chinese citizens and employees concerning mineral smuggling.

Besides, the newspaper said China has been financing terrorism through bribes and illegal transactions in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy. For this, the newspaper gave the example of a mine in Zamfara, Nigeria. It revealed that Chinese nationals were running a terrorist network in northwest Nigeria concerning mining and mineral smuggling in the Zamfara mine.

Besides, China has invested heavily in Nigeria, which is rich in gold and other minerals. Chinese companies have established a foothold in this country, and nearly two lakh Chinese nationals work in Nigeria. Moreover, it has come to light that some of these Chinese nationals have good relations with local terrorist organisations. A Lagos-based analysts group reported increased terrorist attacks and internal conflict in Nigeria since China invested in the country.

These terrorist organisations also claim to control the areas of Zamfara, which has gold mines. In addition, a British newspaper alleged that Chinese citizens have been making friends with terrorists by communicating in the local language. Using the influence of these terrorists, Chinese companies have cut miners’ wages. Additionally, they also smuggle minerals. Nigerian security agencies arrested 17 Chinese nationals in 2020 in this regard. Furthermore, the British newspaper pointed out that a Chinese citizen was detained in October last year.
