Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa participated in the BRICS summit. Addressing the meeting, Foreign Minister Jaishankar pointed out the situation created by the war in Ukraine and called on BRICS to fulfil its responsibility in this regard. Prices of everything from fuel to food have skyrocketed since the outbreak of the Ukraine war. This is affecting the economies of developing countries. This has put the economies of countries, especially those dependent on fuel imports, at risk. Noting this, Jaishankar hoped that BRICS would use its influence to control the rise in prices.

The BRICS countries make up 41% of the world’s population. The GDP of BRICS member countries contributes 24% to the world GDP. The BRICS countries account for 14% of world trade. In such a scenario, the Indian Foreign Minister seems to have appealed to the BRICS to make efforts to cope with the post-war situation in Ukraine and to assist developing countries. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Jaishankar also demanded that BRICS take a tough stance on terrorism.

The BRICS countries should not tolerate terrorism and, more importantly, cross-border terrorism in any form. Jaishankar added that the BRICS countries must take a firm stand against this. Earlier in the day, some Pakistani news channels had expressed concern that India would try to corner Pakistan by raising the issue of terrorism at the BRICS summit.
