Khartoum – The ongoing dispute between the military and paramilitary forces over implementing a democratic system in Sudan has become a conflict. The clashes between the army and paramilitary forces in the capital Khartoum and other major cities of Sudan on Saturday killed at least 56 people and injured more than 600. Besides, paramilitary forces claimed to have controlled the country’s Presidential residence and airports. It revealed that a Saudi Arabian plane had burnt down in an attack on Khartoum’s airport. Meanwhile, the United States, India, the UK, UAE and the United Nations have appealed to both factions in Sudan to end the conflict.

In 2021, the Sudanese army revolted and overthrew the regime of dictator Omar al-Bashir. Then the Sovereign Council, headed by Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was handling the political system in Sudan. Further, due to increasing pressure from the international level, Army Chief General Burhan had indicated implementing a democratic system in the country. The army had announced that a democratic government would be in power in Sudan in the next two years.

Additionally, Army Chief General Burhan had also made it clear that he would take over the overall command of the Defence Forces. But General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Vice Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Chief of the Paramilitary Forces, opposed the proposal for power transfer. General Dagalo had demanded to postpone the plan to implement the democratic system in the country for at least ten years. It led to sharp differences between the army and the paramilitary forces. General Burhan was going to meet General Dagalo and discuss this.

But even before that, the paramilitary forces raised their independent base near the army base in Merowe. Due to this, there was a prediction that the dispute between the two parties would become a clash. On Saturday morning, paramilitary forces led by General Dagalo rebelled against the army and attacked army bases in the capital, Khartoum, Omdurman and other cities. The paramilitary forces claimed to have captured the President’s residence in the capital, the Khartoum International Airport, and other key locations in the country. It killed many people, including an Indian citizen.

Moreover, this conflict between Sudan’s security forces has also affected Saudi Arabia. A Saudi passenger plane was ready for takeoff at the Khartoum airport. There was heavy firing at the airport when the Saudi passengers were about to board the plane and leave for their homeland, severely damaging the Saudi aircraft. The passengers and staff of the plane have been brought to the Saudi embassy. Sudan’s neighbouring country, Chad, has closed its border.

Meanwhile, India has appealed to its citizens in Sudan that they should not leave their homes and remain safe at home until further notice. Furthermore, the US, the UK, UAE and the United Nations have expressed concern over the situation in Sudan. Also, these countries have called on both groups in Sudan to impose a ceasefire.
