28 nations sign pact at UK summit against AI technology risks -

London: As diverse warnings surface regarding the risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the first international pact has been approved. In the first AI Safety Summit held in the United Kingdom, 27 major countries, along with the European Union, approved the Bletchley Declaration. It is the first time a proposal related to AI technology has been approved globally. While this proposal related to the risks associated with AI was being passed, the world’s top entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has raised the alarm that the possibility of AI technology destroying humans is certainly more than zero.

Moreover, the OpenAI company introduced a generative AI model called ChatGPT last year. In the wake of the increasing use of this model and the answers received from it, the issue of risks of AI and its control was raised in the discussion. Along with the world’s major countries, multinational companies, top entrepreneurs, think tanks and the United Nations also raised concerns over the issue of AI technology.

In March, the US-based think tank Future of Life Institute (FLI) wrote an open letter to the international community citing the issue of risks in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, AI expert Eliezer Yudkowsky warned that if humans develop smart artificial intelligence like superhumans, it will lead to the extinction of the human race on Earth. Geoffrey Hinton, a senior researcher in this field, also appealed that all the countries should come together and take care that AI will not be able to control human society. The United States senior diplomat, Henry Kissinger, had also voiced concern over AI technology that machines will replace humans in the coming years.

It is against this backdrop that the first AI Safety Summit held in the UK draws much attention. The United Kingdom had invited governments, companies and firms having a cutting edge in AI technology to the summit. In this meeting held on Wednesday under the supervision of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the development of AI technology, the risks associated with it, how it could be controlled, and other issues were discussed. Subsequently, the participating nations approved the Bletchley Declaration related to AI.

The Bletchley Declaration, the first global agreement associated with AI technology, covers issues like the rapid development of this technology, transparency, risks and policies at national levels. As per the proposal, it is necessary to collaborate with all the components at the international level to avoid the risks related to AI. It also mentions increasing awareness and understanding of the risks of AI, making those using this technology feel accountable, and maintaining maximum transparency.

Furthermore, it is on the background of this summit that the UK Prime Minister has warned that the scope of threats from the AI technology sector can be as intense as a global pandemic or nuclear war.
