Kabul: A swap took place between the prisoners of the US and the Taliban regime of Afghanistan. A Taliban prisoner from Guantanamo Bay prison was released in exchange for a US Navy officer imprisoned in Afghanistan. US President Joe Biden informed about this compromise with the Taliban.
Afghanistan kidnapped American naval officer Mark Frerichs in 2020. Taliban had put Frerichs in captivity for the past two years. The US had begun efforts to release its naval officer for the past few months. The Taliban also demanded the release of Bashir Noorzai, who had been held in Guantanamo Bay prison for 17 years, in exchange for Frerichs. The Biden administration accepted the Taliban’s demand.
Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi informed that Frerichs and Noorzai were exchanged at Kabul International Airport. This is the first compromise made by the US with the Taliban since the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
