The United States and Russia repeatedly clashed over issues like cyberattacks in the United States, military movements on the Ukraine border, action against Alex Navalny and his supporters, Belarus, competition in Arctic and space sectors. After one of the statements made by US President Biden, Russia even recalled its Ambassador to the United States. Putin, in one of his recent interviews, had said that the US-Russia relations hit rock-bottom.

Against all this background, the entire world was focused on the meeting between the US and Russian Presidents. Biden and Putin held discussions on various issues, for nearly three hours, in the city of Geneva. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were also present in the meeting. It is reported in the media that there was a clash between the security personnel and US journalists at the beginning of the meeting.

Biden and Putin gave information regarding the meeting in independent press conferences, called after the meeting. Both the leaders agreed to appoint Ambassadors to improve the diplomatic relations. At the same time, both leaders expressed interest in discussing a nuclear-related agreement. Indications have also been given that there were positive talks regarding the exchange of prisoners.

US President Biden informed that he warned Russia regarding cyberattacks and the Navalny issue. Biden said that Russia has been warned sternly; there will be a harsh retaliation if cyberattacks are launched on any of the 16 sensitive US sectors. The US President also warned Russia of severe repercussions if Navalny died in prison. Biden indicated that the US stand regarding Ukraine will not change.

Russian President Putin claimed to have given a fitting reply to the United States on human rights. He quoted the Capitol Hill violence, arrests of the protestors and the agitation of Black Lives Matter. The statement made by President Putin regarding the meeting and credibility of President Biden draws attention. Putin made a suggestive statement ‘There is no happiness left in life. There is only a mirage of happiness on the horizon. Be satisfied with it.’ The statement made by Putin is the words once said by litterateur Leo Tolstoy.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has fired a salvo of criticism on Biden over the meeting with the Russian President. Trump accused that President Biden surrendered in front of Russia and the United States did not gain anything. At the same time, he retorted that this day of the meeting was a special one for Russia. The leading media in the United States also claimed that Putin achieved whatever he desired.
