US lawmakers dismiss China’s opposition and meet Taiwan’s president

Washington/ Taipei – It has emerged that the United States has straight away dismissed Chinese threats over Taiwan’s issue. On Thursday night, a high delegation comprising five members of the US Congress visited Taiwan. On Friday, the delegation met Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and held an extensive discussion. Besides, it is being revealed that in order to warn over the rising US-Taiwan cooperation, China flew eight of its fighter jets in Taiwanese airspace.

China, Taiwan, US lawmakersOver the last year, the Chinese ruling regime appears to have become even more aggressive about Taiwan. Recently, in a programme held by the communist party, President Xi Jinping mentioned the issue of Taiwan’s merger. During the meeting, he presented an aggressive stance that Taiwan would merge with China. Following that, the developments in the military and various other levels have sped up in China. A few days ago, the news surfaced that President Xi Jinping was granted war powers. Thus, the United States and its allies are focused on increasing cooperation with Taiwan to counter these Chinese actions.

The US Congress members’ visit to Taiwan for the second time in a month appears significant. Earlier, six US Congress members visited Taiwan on 9th November via US defense aircraft. After that, the United States and Taiwan held a meeting wherein they discussed trade and the economy. On Thursday night, a 17 membered Us delegation entered Taiwan, including five United States members. Mark Takano, Elissa Slotkin, Colin Allred, Sara Jacobs and Nancy Mace are the US Congress members.

At the same time, the Congress members met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. A few days ago, the United States had declared an invitation to Taiwan to the Democracy Summit next month. China has been excluded from this summit. Against this background, this meeting by the US congress members appears significant.

Moreover, China has condemned this rising US-Taiwan cooperation. Besides, China raided Taiwan’s airspace with eight of its fighter jets, informed Taiwan Defence Ministry.
