US approves defence agreement worth $6 billion with Poland

Warsaw: While the tension between Russia and Ukraine keeps mounting, the United States has decided to supply super-advanced Abrams tanks to Poland. US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin made this announcement while he was visiting Poland. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency informed that the US Congress has agreed to supply 250 tanks to Poland.

Previously Poland has agreed to purchase advanced F-35 fighter jets from the United States. During the Presidency of Donald Trump, there were talks to establish a permanent US military base in Poland.

As informed by US sources, along with the 250 tanks, the defence deal also includes counter Improvised Explosive Device system, Combat Recovery Vehicles and 50 calibre machine guns. The supply of tanks to Poland will start by the end of this year.

In the past, Poland has purchased Patriot Missiles and the HIMARS Rocket System. More than 4,500 US soldiers are currently deployed in Poland. Additional deployment of 4,000 troops is being planned. This increasing US defence cooperation with Poland becomes significant against the background increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want powerful NATO along with its borders. However, the current agreement with Poland further increased the might of NATO, told US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin.
