Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an ordinance to grant Russian citizenship to all Ukrainian nationals. Earlier, Russia had offered this facility only to citizens from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces in Ukraine. There has been a strong reaction from Ukraine to this decision of President Putin. The Ukrainian foreign ministry has accused Russia of encroaching on Ukrainian sovereignty.
In 2019, for the first time, Russia announced to give citizenship only to citizens of Russian origin from Donetsk and Luhansk provinces. After the military campaign in Ukraine, Russia announced citizenship to all citizens from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces. However, now Russia has allowed citizenship to all the citizens of Ukraine.
This decision of the Russian President has drawn the attention of the international community. President Putin had announced that the objective of the military campaign in Ukraine was to end Nazism and anti-Russia disposition. Putin had also said that the people of Russian origin were being treated as second-grade citizens in Ukraine, and attempts were being made to finish the Russian language and culture.
Considering this background, Putin seems to deliver a different message by announcing Russian citizenship to all Ukrainians. However, Ukraine has criticised the announcement. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba claimed that the announcement by Putin was proof of his aggression. He also retorted that Ukrainian citizens do not need Russian citizenship. Kuleba warned that the efforts to force the Ukrainian citizens to convert into Russian citizens would fail.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that nearly 725,000 Ukrainians from Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson provinces have taken Russian citizenship.
