On Tuesday, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed and a high-level delegation met the Syrian President to hold talks. The government news agencies reported that the UAE Foreign Minister said that UAE is keen on Syria’s unification, stability, and security. Moreover, it will support all the efforts to stop the ongoing conflict in Syria. We will assist the process of establishing peace and fulfilling the ambitions of the Syrian population. Anwar Gargash, the advisor to the President of UAE, justified the Syrian visit. Gargash clarified that UAE would keep making efforts to reconnect with what is broken and strengthen the ties.

The Syrian government also welcomed the visit of the UAE Foreign Minister. The Syrian President informed that the discussions were held regarding bilateral relations and increasing cooperation. Moreover, the opening of new horizons and investments and partnerships in various sectors was also discussed. The statement of the Syrian government says that UAE Foreign Minister expressed confidence in the leadership of President Assad and lauded the post-war rebuilding work. The statement also claimed that President Assad praised the correct stand adopted by the UAE regarding Syria.

The United States has expressed displeasure over the visit of the UAE Foreign Minister, along with his delegation. Ned Price, the spokesman of the State Department, reacted, ‘The United States is deeply concerned over the visit and the messages delivered through the visit. The United States will never support any efforts to streamline relations by re-establishing a cruel dictator like Bashar-Al-Assad. The Gulf countries need to take proper cognisance of Bashar-Al-Assad’s cruelty. Bashar-Al-Assad has been showering atrocities on the Syrian population for a decade. The Syrian regime has failed to provide security and reaching humanitarian aid to the country’s population.’ At the same time, Price also warned that the United States would not stop sanctions against those involved in transactions with the Syrian government.

UAE has initiated steps to re-establish relations with the Assad government since 2018. In 2018, UAE opened its embassy in Syria. After that, the UAE demanded that Syria be included in the Arab League, once again. Last month, the Syrian Commerce Minister held a meeting with the UAE Commerce Minister during the Dubai Expo. Other than UAE, even Jordan and Egypt have initiated moves to improve relations with the Assad government in Syria. In September, the Egyptian Foreign Minister met the Syrian Foreign Minister. After that, it was reported that King Abdullah of Jordan held a telephonic talk with President Assad. Jordan even decided to keep its borders with Syria open for trade.
