Vienna/ Washington/ Beijing: It was revealed that the senior leaders of America and China met in Europe while relations were strained due to various issues like arms supply to Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, economic sanctions, and semiconductors. A few days ago, US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns met Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. The US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and China’s Foreign Policy Adviser Wang Yi met each other in Vienna, Europe. Senior officials from the United States and China were also present on this occasion. While this meeting was taking place, the news that China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang had arrived on a European tour has also been published.
For the past few years, the tension between the US and China has been steadily increasing, and new issues are being added to it. During the tenure of former US President Donald Trump, differences with China started to intensify over issues like Taiwan, 5G, Corona epidemic, cyber-attacks, espionage. Trump’s trade war against China worsened relations between the two countries. Joe Biden, which came after him, has indicated that he will maintain an aggressive policy against China, but in reality, the Biden administration seems to be focusing on softening its stance on China.
Furthermore, relations between the two countries soured after Chinese spy balloons were found in US territory in February. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen’s quick visit to the United States and the discussion with the Speaker of the US Congress had angered China. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to China was cancelled. China has also warned of reducing diplomatic and economic cooperation with the US. Even after that, it has been revealed in the last few days that the US Biden administration has again adopted a hands-off policy with China. A few days ago, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a statement regarding positive and constructive cooperation with China. After that, the US indicated that it was softening its aggressive stance over the ‘spy balloon’ case. At the same time, the visit of the US ambassador to China Burns to the Chinese foreign minister and the high-level meeting held between the two countries in Europe indicate that the Biden administration is taking the initiative to normalize relations with China.
