It has come to the fore that the conflict in Bakhmut, a key city in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, has become more intense and frightening daily. Moreover, Ukrainian leaders and officials admit that the situation has become hell by saying the army has been stuck in a deadlock in Bakhmut. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky and his close aides have decided to fight for Bakhmut until the end, causing unease among military officials.

On the other hand, the Russian private military company Wagner Group, pro-Russian rebel groups and the Russian Defence Department have been providing new information about Bakhmat every 24 hours. A few days ago, the head of the Wagner Group claimed to have acquired legal control over Bakhmut. It was then announced that the leaders of the pro-Russian rebels had visited Bakhmut. After that, the Russian Ministry of Defence said Russian forces had launched air strikes and rocket attacks on Bakhmut. Russian media said that small roads and areas in Bakhmut have been taken over.

Against this backdrop, the claim made in the UK’s Ministry of Defence update leads to attention. The intelligence update released on Friday, April 14, noted that Russia had increased the intensity of attacks on Bakhmut. The update says that cooperation between the Russian military and the Wagner Group has been visible, and they have launched heavy attacks in the last 48 hours.

Furthermore, the Wagner Group’s assault group has been at the forefront of the street conflict, while the Russian forces have established control over the areas conquered by this group. The UK’s Ministry of Defence explained that almost breaking down the supplies to the Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut, many units had to withdraw. The Ukrainian leadership had so far refused to agree to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Bakhmut. However, information released by the UK’s Ministry of Defence has revealed this fact.

Over the past few days, analysts and military experts in the West have begun to criticise Ukraine’s policies of Bakhmut. Moreover, a leak revealed by the US Department of Defence has also raised doubts over Ukraine’s decisions in Bakhmut. Furthermore, the US circles have questioned whether Ukraine can launch a counter-attack campaign against Russia because of the conflict in Bakhmut.
