Russia introduces new law to stop misinformation Russia-Ukraine war; sanctions Facebook and Twitter

Moscow: – Russia has adopted an aggressive stance. It has been said that much misinformation is being spread during the Russia-Ukraine war in Western and social media. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new law with a provision of 15 years of imprisonment for those spreading misinformation against the government. Many US and European news channels and agencies have decided to wind up their operations in Russia.

Photographs and videos of various nature of the Russia-Ukraine war going on for the last ten days are being published on news channels and social media. The Ukrainian citizens killed in the Russian attacks, the Ukrainian soldiers fighting against Russia, visit of the Ukrainian President dressed in a military uniform are receiving huge publicity on social media. But it has been exposed that the photographs of these incidents are a part of spreading misinformation. The photographs of the Ukrainian lady with a gun and the Russian missile attacks have also been exposed to the misinformation campaign.   

Russia has initiated steps against this growing misinformation campaign. The Russian parliament passed a bill against ‘Fake News’ only two days ago, and President Putin has signed the bill. As per the new law, people spreading misinformation regarding the Russian war will face imprisonment of up to 15 years. Russian sources informed that they might also be made to pay a fine. It is being said that the action is mainly to target the western media taking a stand against Russia.   

Russia has initiated steps even against social media along with the press. Furthermore, it has banned two social media websites, Facebook and Twitter, for their failure to block the spread of misinformation through the medium of photographs and videos.
