Two days ago, two Philippine auxiliary ships sailed through the area of Second Thomas Shoal near the Palawan province. The ships carried food supplies to Philippine troops stationed in the area. This maritime area falls under the jurisdiction of the Philippines. Despite this, Chinese Coast Guard boats blocked the passage of Philippine ships and hit them with water jets.

No Filipino soldiers were injured in operation. But an attack by Chinese ships forced the Philippine Auxiliary Ships to withdraw and abandon their mission. The Philippine Foreign Ministry expressed outrage at the whole incident and slammed China.

Philippine Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin Jr. criticized that the actions of the Chinese patrol boats of infiltrating and operating in Philippine waters are illegal. Locsin accused that three Chinese patrol boats had entered the Philippine marine region. The Foreign Minister warned that these provocative actions would worsen relations between China and the Philippines.

He also reminded of the defence cooperation agreement between the Philippines and the United States. Under the agreement, the United States could intervene militarily to protect the interests of the Philippines. So, if China poses a military challenge, the Philippines will seek help from the United States, said Locsin.

Meanwhile, a few hours ago, the Philippines and Vietnam announced a joint scientific research expedition to the South China Sea. The announcement is claimed to be a challenge to China.
