Pakistan’s defeat in 1971 war was not a military, but a political failure, Pakistan’s outgoing army chief says

Islamabad: Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, facing serious allegations of unaccounted wealth and embezzlement and corruption, has announced his retirement. During his farewell speech, General Bajwa expressed his displeasure at the criticism levelled at the Pakistan Army. General Bajwa also admitted the army’s political meddling, which is the reason for facing such criticism. General Bajwa also claimed that India humiliatingly defeated Pakistan in the 1971-year war because of Pakistan’s political system’s failure and not the military.

militaryPakistan Army Chief Bajwa himself announced his retirement date as November 29 amidst rumours of him trying to get an extension. Pakistani journalists are accusing General Bajwa of undermining his efforts over the last six months to seek an extension. Ahmed Noorani, a journalist, revealed that the wealth of family members and relatives of General Bajwa has enormously increased during his tenure as army chief. Before publishing this news, the journalist tried to contact Gen Bajwa and his family to get a comment from their side. However, he failed to get any response. Also, the suspicion around it has grown as the Pakistani news channel exposing the scandal went off the air for a while.

Due to this, Pakistan’s Army, including General Bajwa, is facing intense criticism. The media has accused and criticized Pakistan’s military for overthrowing an elected government several times to seize power. Also, some journalists are accusing Pakistani leaders of conveniently ignoring the corruption and misconduct committed by military officers. The latest example is of Gen Bajwa, of an unrelated exponential increase in the wealth of his relatives. Such reports support Imran Khan, who has made serious accusations against Pakistan’s military authorities. At the same time, the journalists are pointing out that Imran Khan also took the help of the army to come to power.

In such a situation, General Bajwa is trying to gain sympathy by taking a defensive position while delivering his farewell speech. General Bajwa is trying to defend the Pakistan Army by recalling great feats achieved, especially in the 1971 war. However, during General Bajwa’s tenure, there are reports of a split within the Pakistan Army, and the differences among the military officers are increasing. It is claimed that this will have serious consequences for the security of Pakistan.
