Nearly three months ago, after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan capital Kabul, extremist leaders and journalists celebrated the development. Some political leaders and responsible journalists had warned to view the developments with caution. Afrasiab Khattak, a senior leader of the Awami National Party and former Pakistani Senate, was one of them. Khattak had criticised in the past that Pakistan’s ISI was responsible for the Taliban attacks in Afghanistan. Khattak levelled serious accusations against Pakistan and the Taliban while speaking to the European Foundation for South-East Asian Studies think tank.

Khattak launched a scathing attack ‘Four decades ago, while the civil war was raging in Afghanistan, Pakistan established its dominance in Afghanistan with the help of the United States and the Arab countries. Pakistan influenced the Afghan refugees with extremism. Through this, Pakistan successfully erased the Pashtun identity of the Afghans and made them extremists.’ Khattak alleged that the ISI does all this through the Taliban, both together are erasing the original identity of Afghanistan.

Khattak further lambasted, ‘Moreover, while they were in power in the past and even today, the Taliban is destroying Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. Taliban is trying to bring Afghanistan under the cultural dominance of Pakistan and by doing so, it is fulfilling the objectives of Pakistan military and ISI.’

Pakistan military and ISI are plotting to finish the Pashtun identity and culture in Afghanistan to dominate that country. The Pashtun Tahafuz Movement is fully aware of the evil intentions. Khattak accused that this was why Pakistan security agencies are targeting the leaders, supporters and people from the organisations. Khattak seems to be pointing to the atrocities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province without making a direct reference.

Khattak suggested that instead of trying to finish the identity and culture of Afghanistan through the Taliban, Pakistan should try to improve relations with India. Khattak said that reconciliation with India is necessary for the social and economic development of Pakistan. Few journalists from Pakistan also share this view. If Pakistan has to sustain, it will have to end all its disputes with India. These journalists believe that Pakistan should curtail its military expenditure and change its policies towards India.
