Pacific islands back out from cooperation with ChinaLast month, a meeting of QUAD was held in Japan. On this occasion, the United States announced the particular economic group Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), including 13 countries from the Indo-Pacific region. Reports had been published that China, restless with the development, was trying to get the island countries in the Pacific to establish cooperation with China to corner the United States and Australia. China had dismissed the allegations. But China announced starting Common Development Vision with ten island countries in the Pacific region. China had indicated establishing trade and security agreements with the island countries in the Pacific under the agreement. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also visiting these island countries to get these countries to accept the proposal.

China was disappointed in its meeting with Fiji regarding the proposal. Prime Minister of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama, clarified that the island countries are not united on the Chinese proposal. Any proposal presented in the region is accepted only if all the island countries are aggregable to the proposal. But Prime Minister Bainimarama lambasted that the Pacific Island countries do not share the same confidence regarding the proposal.

The refusal by the Fiji Prime Minister is a major jolt for China. Foreign Minister Wang Yi advised the island countries not to be unnecessarily worried. Foreign Minister Yi said that this proposal would create camaraderie worldwide. But the Australian media is claiming that the Pacific Island countries who have a glaring example of the Chinese cooperation with the Solomon Islands will not be appeased with the Chinese bluffs.
