NSCN-K, the organisation involved in terrorist activities in North East India willing to engage in peace talks

Guwahati: National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) has expressed willingness for a ceasefire, followed by peace talks. Niki Sumi, the organisation leader, announced that the Indian government is making serious and sincere efforts for resolving the problems in Nagaland; therefore, NSCN-K is willing to participate in peace talks to find an early solution. The ceasefire announcement by NSCN-K is believed to be a major success for the government, for establishing peace in North East India. Because this is the last association of the Naga leaders of Indian origin that has distanced itself from the peace process. Besides, this is the organisation responsible for most of the violent activities in North East India.

In 2015, NSCN-K had violated the ceasefire agreed with the government and had started violent activities on a massive scale. 18 soldiers had been killed in an attack on the military convoy, at Chandel in Manipur. The main accused for this attack was Niki Sumi. Also, there is an award of ₹1 million on his head. SS Khaplang who formed the group NSCN-K separating from the NSCN, died in 2017, in Myanmar. After that, Nyemlang Konyak became the leader of the NSCN-K. But he entered another group of Naga terrorists, by the name NSCN-R. This group is currently engaged in peace talks with the government. Niki Sumi became the leader of NSCN-K sine then. NSCN-K has carried out a large number of violent activities in the last few years. The anti-India activities of ULFA, led by Paresh Barua, are continuing from China and Myanmar. At the same time, the terrorist activities of NSCN-K also are ongoing. The Indian government has delivered severe jolts to these terrorist organisations, by carrying out joint missions with the Myanmar military. Many terrorists from these terrorist organisations have been killed in these missions. Many terrorists have also surrendered in the last few months, in view of this government offensive. The change in the stand of NSCN-K, who were continuing on the path of terror, opposing the peace talks bitterly, is being viewed against this background.
