North Korea fires 23 missiles to challenge South Korea and US; South Kor

Seoul: North Korea has caused a stir in the Korean peninsula by firing 23 missiles amidst the Vigilant Storm air force exercises held between the US and South Korea. One of the missiles landed just 60 kilometres off the South Korean coast. South Korea is calling it a territorial encroachment and has warned that they would not tolerate any violation of their airspace. In response, South Korean warplanes have reportedly fired air-to-ground missiles into North Korea’s maritime zone. International analysts claim that this is the first instance that South Korea has responded so aggressively to any missile tests of North Korea.

A few hours ago, North Korea expressed its fury over the Vigilante Storm, the largest joint air force exercise between the US and South Korean air forces. North Korea has also threatened to give an equal and powerful response to the US. The US analysts have warned not to ignore the threat of North Korea, which has constantly been threatening South Korea and also about the possibility that North Korea can take extreme measures.

On Wednesday morning, North Korea, following its warning, fired 23 missiles on the disputed maritime border of the Korean peninsula. One of the missiles crossed the Northern Limit Line to land at the maritime boundary about 60 km off the Sokcho coast, east of South Korea and 167 km from Ulleung Island. As soon as the North Korean missile crossed the Northern Limit Line, air sirens began to wail in South Korea and on Ulleung Island. South Korea has issued an alert to the citizens of Ulleung to leave the island.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol accused North Korea of violating its airspace. Also, an emergency meeting of the Security Committee was held under the chairmanship of President Yeol. After this, South Korea also launched its warplanes towards the Northern Limit Line and fired three missiles into North Korea’s maritime boundary. South Korea’s defiance ministry released a video of the entire airstrike to warn North Korea.

Meanwhile, President Yeol has adopted an aggressive military policy since taking over the reins of South Korea. Previously, South Korea had never responded with such aggression to North Korea’s missile tests. The whole world is paying attention to how North Korea reacts to this. If North Korea acts aggressively, a conflict between North Korea and South Korea will erupt, drawing into it the US and other countries in the region. North Korea has recently claimed that the US is preparing for a nuclear war and that the US military exercise with South Korea is part of the US nuclear war. North Korea announced they would not deter from using nuclear weapons as per the new nuclear policy. Therefore, the world is keenly watching as tensions brew in the Korean peninsula.
