London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as chairman of the Conservative Party on Thursday. Johnson had decided it because of serious allegations of corruption, discontent within the party and the resignation of government ministers. Johnson will serve as Britain’s interim prime minister for the next few days until the ruling Conservative Party announces a new president.
Over the past few days, Prime Minister Johnson has been the target of criticism. Some controversial decisions led to the resignation of cabinet ministers in Johnson’s government. Among them were Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Minister Sajid Javid. Consequently, it sparked a discussion that Johnson had lost the trust of his party colleagues. Under such circumstances, Johnson resigned as party president on Thursday.
US President Joe Biden reacted to the resignation of Boris Johnson. The United States and Britain are friends and allies. President Biden refrained from mentioning Johnson and said that the special relationship would continue. Meanwhile, the names of Rishi Sunak, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi are being discussed for the post of Prime Minister.
