Iran warns of expelling IAEA inspectors

Tehran: – Iran has issued a warning to President-elect Joe Biden, even before he can take over the United States’ reins. If the sanctions against Iran are not withdrawn on time, Iran will expel all observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from the country. Iran has given 21st February as the deadline to the United States for this. US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, lashed out that it is not within Iran’s rights to expel the IAEA observers.

Nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated in Iran in the last month. Iran had accused the United States and Israel as being responsible for the assassination of Fakhrizadeh. At the same time, some important decisions were taken by the Iranian parliament regarding the nuclear program after the nuclear scientist’s assassination. These included the decisions to start the Uranium enrichment at the Fordo plant and take the Uranium enrichment level to 20%, in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran also announced that the IAEA observers would not be allowed entry into the nuclear projects.

In this week itself, Iran announced that the process for taking the Uranium enrichment level to 20% has been started. At the same time, senior Iranian officials announced that work on 1,000 centrifuges has also been started. Along with the United States, Germany and France also had criticised that these Iranian actions violate the 2015 nuclear deal. The European countries also warned that Iran should abide by the provisions of the 2015 nuclear deal.

But Iran has lambasted that unless its conditions are accepted, it will not stop the process of Uranium enrichment. At the same time, Iranian lawmaker, Ahmed Amirabadi Farhani, warned that if the United States’ sanctions, on the Iranian economic, banking and fuel sectors are not withdrawn, Iran will expel all the IAEA observers from the country. Farhani said that the United States has the time, till 21st February, to take this action.

Meanwhile, Iran also is aware that incumbent US President, Donald Trump, does not pay any heed to the Iranian demands. Therefore, it is presumed that the timeline till 21st February, given by Iran, is meant for President-elect Joe Biden, who favours a nuclear deal with Iran. The transition of power is happening in the United States; Joe Biden will be sworn in as the United States president on 20th January. As per analysts, it will be difficult for Biden to withdraw the sanctions, within one month of assuming power. Therefore, Iran seems to have cornered Biden with such a stiff timeline.
