India expresses strong concern over situation in UkraineR Ravindra, the Indian diplomat in the United Nations, expressed serious concerns over the situation in Ukraine while speaking at the UN Security Council. Women, children and the elderly are facing grave problems because of the Ukraine conflict. Their plight is touching. R Ravindra expressed Indian feelings saying millions have been displaced and are forced to take refuge in the neighbouring countries. R Ravindra expressed an expectation that the international rules should not be trampled on and civic facilities should not be targeted in such conflicts.

Meanwhile, the Indian demand is an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and diplomatic negotiations. Ravindra reiterated this demand in the UN Security Council. India is sending humanitarian aid to Ukrainians and the Ukrainian refugees in other countries. Ravindra informed that these include medicines and other essential commodities. The Indian diplomat also pointed out that the adverse effects of the Ukraine war are not only felt by the European countries but also the developing countries.

Ukraine is a leading country in food grain and fertiliser production. The developing countries dependent on the Ukrainian wheat exports were severely hit after the exports stopped from Ukraine. R Ravindra also pointed out, ‘Taking cognisance of this, there is a need to supply food grain to the developing countries at a reasonable cost, with ease and based on equality. This is not the time to argue about the food grain supply promoting the free markets. There also cannot be any discrimination regarding the food grain supply in such times.’

The developed countries, feeling the shortage of food grain, started filling their reserves following the start of the Ukraine conflict. Moreover, companies from these countries began exploiting the food grain shortage for profiteering. Therefore, these companies took the initiative of approaching India, having abundant stocks of food grain, to supply them. But India imposed a ban on wheat export and announced that wheat would be provided to other countries only at the government level. India also said that the priority of supply would be the severity of need. Developed countries have expressed regret over this Indian policy.
