One and a half months ago, Niger‘s Army had rebelled and seized the reins of power by blinding President Mohamed Bazoum. The Army had accused President Bazoum’s government of being corrupt and working at the behest of Western countries. The local people have also supported this rebellion in Niger. After this, President Bazoum appealed to the international community for help.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) organisation has criticised Niger’s rebel army and has asked them to delegate the power to President Bazoum. This organisation had also threatened to take military action in Niger if the rebel army did not follow this notice. However, West African countries like Mali and Burkina Faso supported Niger’s rebellion, and later, the organisation had to give up its aggressive attitude.

After this, the government of Niger announced the expulsion of the French ambassador. Along with this, the Army also gave the French ambassador 48 hours to leave the country. French President Macron had refused to recall the ambassador, terming Niger’s rebellion illegal. Because of this, there were reports of French Ambassador Sylvain Itte taking shelter at the French military base located in the capital, Niamey.

Meanwhile, French President Macron has indicated taking military action in Niger. Macron warned that France will act against Niger’s rebel army if President Bazoum demands so. After this, the government of Niger has accused France of preparing to take military action. A few days ago, the United States also indicated taking military action in Niger. Because of this, tension has arisen in West African countries.
